This project will increase food production and income for 50 most vulnerable families impacted by COVID-19 in the rural community of Cambodia by providing them farming resources including seed and fertilizer to launch their gardens at home.
COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the economy in Cambodia. Most people in Siem Reap work in tourism industries, but the pandemic has forced thousand of tourism-related businesses to close, leaving hundreds of thousands of people unemployed. These job losses have cut the income sources of the families, creating deep poverty and food crisis. An estimated loss of just 30 cents US per day in income per person would double the country's poverty rate (UN World Food Program).
Our Home Gardening Project allows families to produce their own food and income, by providing them free farming resources including seed, fertilizer, and tools to launch their own gardens. The families are supported with on-hand training and mentoring from our staff. The families who have small space of land are also provided with recycled containers and wood to make their own vegetable beds. The selected families are required to sign a contract as a way of demonstrating their commitment.
This project's spirit is "helping people, help themselves". It will support 50 most vulnerable families to increase their own food production and income, which will prevent them from malnutrition and starvation, as well as allowing them to stand up to fight against COVID-19 once it has passed.
