Summary

The Kep Farm - social business was developed in response to the need for a safe environment for people with disabilities (PWD) who have outgrown alternative care institutions as they turn 18 years old. Due to the societal stigmas embedded in karma, it is believed a disability is a form of punishment for a crime committed in a past life. Therefore, PWD face persistent discrimination in Cambodian society. The farm offers skill-based training and life-skill training to empower every beneficiary.

Challenge

In Cambodia, people with disabilities remain one of the most marginalised groups in the country with limited access to basic services and the denial of their basic rights. Furthermore, due to a lack of knowledge and resources, it is common for parents to abandon children with disabilities as they are unable to cater to their specific needs. As a result, PWD are left vulnerable to abuse, exploitation and human trafficking as they are typically left to live on the streets.

Solution

By investing in people with disabilities, Damnok Toek is able to demonstrate the potential that can be reached by PWD despite the limitations this marginalised population faces. By advocating for the rights and respect of PWD in Cambodia, our efforts prove that through support and encouragement people are able to exceed both personal and societal expectations of themselves.

Long-Term Impact

The farm works to empower people with disabilities and break down the misconceptions that PWD are non-contributing members of society. This project aims to develop each beneficiaries' independence as high as individually possible to be able to one day live an independent life. For those where this is not feasible, the farm will continue to support their needs with the aim that the farm will become a financially self-sufficient project.
