A Heartfelt Thank You - Reflecting on 2024 & Looking Ahead

By Charles Githu & Elizabeth Waichinga | Fundraising and Communication Department

Impact in 2024
Impact in 2024

As we journey through 2025, we pause to express our deepest gratitude for the remarkable achievements we made together in 2024. Your unwavering support has played a vital role in transforming lives, offering hope, and ensuring no one faces cancer alone.

In 2024, Faraja welcomed over 9,000 individuals into our wellness centres and support groups in Nairobi and Eldoret, while extending our reach to nearly 3,000 more through targeted awareness campaigns and collaborations. Thanks to your generosity, we provided crucial financial assistance to 252 patients, enabling them to begin or complete their cancer treatments.

Staying true to our mission, we continued to prioritize the emotional, psychological, and physical well-being of those battling cancer. Our dedicated team conducted over 1,000 individual therapy sessions and facilitated 91 group sessions with 1,144 participants. Additionally, we held 104 support group meetings with more than 3,300 attendees, many of whom joined us virtually through our hybrid model. One of the year's highlights was the success of our 335 Zumba sessions, which not only encouraged physical activity but also helped patients manage the effects of cancer and its treatment while fostering a strong sense of community and joy.

In 2024, changes in healthcare funding, particularly transition to Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), brought significant challenges for cancer patients. Many patients faced delays in diagnostic tests and were unable to begin treatment, or found themselves stuck mid-treatment. This gap in care led to a surge in demand for our services, underscoring the essential role we play in ensuring access to care and holistic support for those in need.

None of this would have been possible without you. Whether through individual donations, family contributions, or participation in our signature events- White Water Rafting Challenge and the Be Bold Go Gold Walk/Run for Childhood Cancer, you have been at the heart of our mission. We also want to express our heartfelt appreciation to our volunteers and therapists, whose commitment and expertise make all our work possible.

Looking Ahead to 2025

In 2025, we are excited to expand our reach with plans to open new Faraja centers, bringing our services even closer to those in need.

Cancer continues to be the third leading cause of death in Kenya, with cervical cancer which is largely preventable, being the leading cause of cancer deaths among women. In 2022 alone, there were approximately 5,236 women diagnosed with cervical cancer. Screening, early detection and prompt treatment remains key to improving treatment outcomes. This is the message we as Faraja share in all our community education forums.  As our valued partners, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your continued generosity. Your contributions bring hope, healing, and life to families and individuals like Tabitha, who is a beneficiary of our therapies. Together, we are making a lasting difference.

Thank you for being an integral part of this life-changing journey. Here’s to another year of hope, impact and progress in 2025!

With heartfelt gratitude,

David Makumi

CEO, Faraja Cancer Support Trust.
