Children thrive best in families, yet in Thailand, hundreds of unregulated children's homes leave 120,000 children neglected, without attachment, and separated from parents. Despite this, 90% still have at least one living parent. In Sangkhlaburi, One Sky is changing this by helping children stay in families. In partnership with local government, we support Thai, Burmese, Karen, and Mon families to keep their children at home or assist them into foster and kinship care.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) says that we must support families to be able to care for and raise their own children. In Thailand little help is available for families while hundred's of children's homes raise money to care for children who have parents that love them but cannot cope because of poverty and challenges getting their children into school. We are working to change this and to see many more of the 120,000 children in institutions instead living in living in families
The best interest of children is rarely upheld by the easiest or most convenient solutions. We must find ways to reach the most isolated and disadvantaged communities and to provide the support they need. When it is necessary to separate children from their parents then we must have high quality family based options such as foster care and kinship care available. This is the model we have developed in Sangkhlaburi and now want to help others to develop too.
We have shown that change is possible and that there is a way to support the most disadvantaged parents in Thailand and not take their children away into children's homes. There is still a long way to go to help Thailand come in line with the CRC and to see more of the 120,000 children living in institutional types of care instead living in families. But we are confident this change is possible and with your support we will keep working for this goal.
