Last winter was tough - not only because the weather is always a challenge. No, this time it was extremely hard especially for our animal welfare activists on site. The winter was harder this time because no German volunteers could be on site for over a year due to Corona. And therefore no volunteers could build additional roofs, distribute straw or made descriptions of the dogs for our gallery.
The animal welfare activists have tried to manage all this in teamwork with the workers, the veterinarians and Romanian volunteers. But unfortunately, especially when it comes to making dogs visible, we are extremely behind, especially in Bucov.
We are looking forward - the winter with all its challenges is over and slowly we can start planning again to send registration groups to Romania.
The last two months winter preparations took place in our shelters.
Stocks of straw were filled up and all of the doghouses were filled with straw. New roofs were built by the worker so long as the wheat her was good. But now the snow and cold is there and everybody will fighting for our dogs.
Just in this times the dogs need good and enough food, water (water bowls has to be freed from ice) and regularly the straw has to be renewed.
These hard months are terrible for dogs and people also.
thank you for all your support so that we are able to make all these things possible for our dogs
The main tasks for winter preparation are always the construction of roofs all year round and the making of huts on site for the dogs. Especially the construction of roofs is usually advanced 4 to 5 times a year by volunteers. Unfortunately due to the pandemic only one construction team could travel to Romania. But they worked really well and built about 140 running meters of roof in Campina.
In Bucov our animal welfarist Aniela built many new kennels together with the local workers and also immediately roofs. Under her supervision several additional water tanks were installed on the ever growing area.
In addition again regularly huts for the dogs were delivered.
From the end of October on, depending on the temperatures, a lot of straw is needed to lay out the huts.
We all hope that next year the shelters in Bucov in particular will be really well-run again, so that many kennels will get their roofs.
Thank you for every single donation - it is needed even more right now.
The last winter as such was thankfully not as cold as other winters, but still we had to provide all dogs with straw in the huts again and again. And in April, when we all thought the winter was over, there was another heavy winter break-in for about 1 week. In the winter time the dogs need more food. This also means higher costs again and again.
After the last mission in December 2019, during which roofs were once again vigorously built, there was another short mission in February to record dogs. This is also important so that the dogs become visible and have a chance for adoption.
This meant that for the rest of the time our animal welfare activists and their workers had to do everything without any support from volunteers. The COVID19 pandemic made things even more difficult.
The not so cold winter has brought us a tick explosion especially in Bucov, which we have to fight now.
Please continue to support ProDogRomania e.V. in all our projects and from about October 2020 on it will be 'Facing the winter' again
Throughout December there were four volunteer groups to make a lot of work for the dogs in all the shelters.
Starting again with building roofs. A small team was in Bucov but they were very effective. And one of the romanian workers helped on the last day to fix the last roof. Incredible!
Also the volunteers placed in some kennels tiles, gravel and doghouses.
Straw was delivered and all the volunteers distributed a lot of straw in the doghouses after cleaning them before. So in this isolated doghouses in the kennels with roofs the dogs can stand the winter better.
The shelter workers will change the straw during the whole winter. A very important task near to give the dogs enough food and to give them fresh water (not easy in winter because the water is very often frozen :( .
Till now it was a great work done by very engaged volunteers and also by the shelter workers.
