New Eyes for Kentucky - May 2023

Since our last report in January, New Eyes has experienced a significant increase in demand for new prescription eyeglasses from across the country, including the state of Kentucky. From Mid-January to today, we've provided an additional 415 Kentucky residents with new glasses - a 133% increase from last reporting period. The total number of low-income Kentuckians helped through GlobalGiving donations is 178: 81 women, 61 men and 36 children.

New Eyes worked directly with 14 social service agencies in Kentucky to provide their clients with the simple, yet critical, tool of eyeglasses. Since January, 28 children, 231 women and 156 men in Kentucky were assisted with new eyeglasses (children receive two pair - one for home and one for school!). Sixty-nine percent of families were working poor; the remaining 31% were adults 65 and older, all enrolled in traditional Medicare which does not pay for eyeglasses for seniors. The majority of the remaining adults did not qualify for KY Medicaid (which does now pay for eyeglasses), many no longer covered by Medicaid due to the cessation of Covid emergency Medicaid coverage. Without New Eyes, these individuals would not have been able to afford the glasses they need to see clearly and build better lives. Over the years, GlobalGiving funding has enabled children to succeed in school; adults to find employment or improve job performance; and senior citizens to live more securely, independently, and safely, able to read medication labels, avoid falling hazards and move more freely.

Your support has been critical to allowing so many in need in Kentucky build better lives for themselves, their families and communities. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

With deep gratitude,

Jean Gajano, Executive Director
