In Southern Araucania, many elderly residents struggle with preventable vision loss due to long waiting lists for essential eye surgeries. Cataracts and other eye diseases significantly impact their independence and overall well-being, increasing the risk of permanent blindness. The goal of this project is to restore sight to 144 elderly patients through free ophthalmologic surgeries, ensuring they regain their quality of life and autonomy.
Thanks to the collaboration of Desafío Levantemos Chile, the Chilean Society of Ophthalmology, and local hospitals, a team of 30 medical professionals has been providing these much-needed surgeries. The initiative not only reduces waiting lists but also provides comprehensive post-surgery care, ensuring long-term benefits for the patients.
With the support of generous donors, progress has already been made. Surgeries are underway, bringing hope and independence back to those affected. However, there is still work to be done. Strengthening our connection with the community remains a priority, ensuring that more elderly individuals receive the timely care they need.
This project is more than a medical intervention; it is about restoring dignity and enabling elderly residents to participate fully in their daily lives. Continued support is essential to completing this mission, allowing more patients to receive the vision-restoring surgeries they urgently need. Together, we are making a lasting difference in Southern Araucania.
Thank you very much
