Restore Critical Eye Care for Aging in NW Cameroon

Recently, our International Volunteer Administrator, Esther Sit, participated in the Humanitarian Affairs Segment and the 59th session of the Human Rights Council at UN Geneva (June 17-20). This was a crucial opportunity to highlight the urgent plight of older persons in conflict zones directly to international decision-makers.

Why UN Advocacy Matters for Our Project:

The global humanitarian crisis is escalating, with older persons often overlooked, especially in conflict-affected areas like Cameroon’s Anglophone regions. Our eye care center in Bambui, a lifeline for thousands, was forcibly shut down in 2017 due to armed conflict—a grave humanitarian law violation. At UN Geneva, Esther delivered powerful interventions, emphasizing that true humanitarian innovation requires empowering local actors and prioritizing community-based solutions.

Our Key Messages at the UN & Their Direct Link to Your Impact:

Esther shared three crucial messages for a more inclusive humanitarian response, directly reflecting our GlobalGiving project goals:

1. Invest in community-based health systems, including vision and chronic care for the elderly.
• Your Impact: This is the very heart of our fundraising! Your donations allow us to renovate and re-equip our eye care center, rebuilding essential vision and chronic eye care services inaccessible since 2017. Funds will also train skilled ophthalmic staff, ensuring vital services are delivered by qualified local professionals, making the system truly community-driven and sustainable.
2. Support livelihoods and social protection for aging rural populations.
• Your Impact: Improved vision is a fundamental enabler of livelihoods. When the elderly regain sight, they can participate more fully in daily life, engage in income-generating activities, and maintain independence. This reduces their vulnerability and aligns with the broader humanitarian reset we advocated for.
3. Count and consult older people—their voices and data must shape our response.
• Your Impact: Our project is inherently people-centered. By focusing on the aging population, we prioritize a demographic often overlooked. The center's reopening is a direct response to their expressed needs, and our community outreach ensures we continue to engage and listen, actively "counting and consulting" them.

We also urged the UN, Member States, and global partners to prioritize older persons in humanitarian planning, fund age-inclusive responses, support local organizations like ours, and uphold humanitarian law for health infrastructure. Your funding makes our project a tangible example of this prioritization, symbolizing the restoration of protected health infrastructure.
