The Anglophone conflict in Cameroon's NW region has left its aging population without access to critical eye care since 2017, when our eye care center was shut down. While limited outreach has occurred, the vast majority of elderly individuals face preventable vision loss and blindness. This project is vital for reopening the eye care center, thereby restoring essential services that will treat eye diseases, prevent irreversible blindness and empower the community with eye health knowledge.
In 2017, the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon resulted in the closure, raid and vandalization of RECEWAPEC's eye care center in Bambui Tubah Sub-Division, with vital equipment damaged or stolen. This has deprived an estimated 8,000 elderly individuals in the North West Region of essential eye care, causing a rise in untreated conditions, preventable blindness, and a diminished quality of life. With decreasing hostilities, the center urgently requires re-equipping to restore crucial services.
This project will restore essential eye care by fully reopening the center over 18 months. We will renovate, re-equip with medical tools, and train skilled ophthalmic staff to provide comprehensive eye exams, diagnosis and treatment to the elderly. Community outreach will be regularly conducted to extend care and raise eye health awareness in remote areas. These actions will promote early detection and ensure timely treatment, directly aligning with UN SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.
The project aims to make the eye care center fully operational, equipped and staffed, providing comprehensive services to 1,000+ elderly individuals. This revival will yield a far-reaching and transformative impact on the war-affected aging community through: (1) Improved vision and quality of life; (2) Reduced burden of preventable eye conditions; (3) An empowered and informed community regarding eye health; and (4) The creation of a sustainable eye care system in war-torn NW Cameroon.
