Celebrating Student Achievements and Opportunities for Growth in 2026

By Sachiyo Ouchi | Public Relation Team

The 2026 academic year has begun with 156 students, ranging from kindergarten to high school, learning and growing together at Koinonia. The school serves families from a wide range of economic backgrounds:

  • 16% of students are able to pay full tuition.

  • 84% contribute approximately 10% of school fees and rely on sponsorship support to continue their education.

For many families, Koinonia represents far more than access to quality academics. It is known as a place where each child’s unique gifts are discovered, nurtured, and celebrated. Students learn not only academic knowledge, but also gain the confidence to appreciate the abilities God has given them.

Discovering Talents Through Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular programs are an essential part of the Koinonia experience. From an early age, students are encouraged to explore a wide range of activities that develop creativity, discipline, and teamwork.

From Grade 1 to Grade 9, every student participates weekly in:

  • Swimming

  • Athletics

  • Dance

  • Music and instrumental performance

  • Art

Beginning in Grade 7, students expand their activities to include:

  • Basketball

  • Table tennis

  • Brass band

  • Cooking

From Grade 10 onward, students begin to specialize in the areas where their talents and passions are strongest, refining their skills and building confidence.

These experiences allow students to grow in ways that traditional classroom learning alone cannot provide.

Celebrating Student Achievements

The impact of these programs is already visible. During last year’s Christmas Concert, students showcased remarkable talent through dance, vocal performances, brass band pieces, and ensemble music.

Particularly encouraging is the growth seen in students who joined Koinonia at a young age. Those who entered in kindergarten or Grade 1 often display remarkable development by the time they reach junior high and high school. Over the years, their gifts blossom through consistent encouragement and practice.

Opportunities for Growth in 2026

The 2026 school year promises many opportunities for students to challenge themselves and shine:

  • February: Swimming Gala

  • March: Regional Athletics Meet and Basketball Tournament

  • May: Music Festival and Table Tennis Tournament

Last year, one of Koinonia’s soprano soloists and a trumpet player advanced to the county-level music competition. Both students have already begun training in hopes of reaching even higher levels this year. Meanwhile, the table tennis team has started intensive practice for the upcoming tournament.

These events not only celebrate achievement but also teach students perseverance, teamwork, and resilience.

2026 Focus: Building a Court for Confidence

Basketball has quickly become one of the most popular sports among Koinonia students. However, the school currently lacks a proper court, making training difficult and sometimes unsafe.

The 2026 focus project is the construction of a safe and well-built basketball court that will allow students to train effectively and develop their athletic abilities.

Student Voices

“I joined Koinonia in 2024, and that was the first time I learned about basketball. Playing as a team is so much fun. But strong winds blow across the field in the afternoon, and we practice in the dust. Sand gets into my eyes and I sometimes breathe in the dust. Even so, I want to reach the county tournament this year.” (A)

“Before coming to Koinonia, the only sport I had played was football. Because I am tall and fast, my coach encouraged me to try basketball. At first I was afraid to go for the ball, but now I have improved in passing and shooting. Dribbling is still difficult because the court is uneven.” (J)

A Vision from the Coach: Mr. Tuisang (PE Teacher and International Basketball Referee):

“I have been teaching PE at Koinonia for 12 years. After the school moved to Mai Mahiu in 2020, we finally had space to develop sports activities. In 2022 we formed our first basketball team. To build strong junior high and high school teams, a proper basketball court is essential.”

Many students discover their athletic abilities for the first time after joining Koinonia. Through sports, they also learn teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.

Building the Future Together

Since relocating to Mai Mahiu in 2020, Koinonia has steadily improved its campus. A running track was completed in 2022, creating new opportunities for athletics. However, the planned basketball court remains unfinished.

Completing this court will allow more students to develop their athletic potential and train safely while strengthening Koinonia’s growing basketball program.

A Shared Vision

At Koinonia Education Centre, education means nurturing the whole child - body, mind, and spirit. Extracurricular activities provide students with the tools to discover their talents, build confidence, and imagine new possibilities for their future.

With the support of donors and partners, Koinonia can continue to offer these life-changing opportunities and help every child discover the gifts they have been given.

We warmly invite you to support this vision and help Koinonia’s students grow, thrive, and shine.
