Summary

This project will support the expansion of household sanitation in Haiti. It is estimated that nearly 70% of urban Haitians do not have access to safe, hygienic and dignified sanitation. Since 2006, SOIL has been working in urban and peri-urban communities in Haiti to expand access to safe, affordable, and restorative sanitation services in some of Haiti's most vulnerable communities.

Challenge

Only 34% of families living in urban Haiti have access to improved sanitation. As a result, Haiti has the highest rate of childhood diarrhea in the world and is battling one of the largest cholera epidemics in modern history. As water sources are polluted from human waste, soil nutrients are declining rapidly, contributing to malnutrition. In Haiti, the cycle of poor sanitation, environmental degradation, and poverty are devastating for communities and the environment alike.

Solution

SOIL's lifesaving sanitation service is tackling one of the world's toughest challenges with a groundbreaking environmental solution. SOIL provides families in under-resourced communities with household toilets, waste collection, and safe treatment and transformation of wastes into agricultural-grade compost. Together we are demonstrating it's possible to simultaneously restore soil health, save water, create jobs, stop the spread of disease, grow more food, and mitigate climate change.

Long-Term Impact

SOIL's provides safe sanitation services to over 7,500 people and produces 100+ tons of organic compost annually. As we expand, SOIL is on its way to reach 15% of the city of Cap-Haitien with sanitation and generate 800+ metric tons of compost by 2025. Our ultimate goal is to revolutionize the approach to urban sanitation, proving a scalable and replicable model to provide earth-restoring sanitation access for the 700+ million people living in urban communities who currently lack access.
