The primary objectives of this project are centered around capacity building, increasing accessibility to healthcare, ensuring the sustainability of the CHI groups, and fostering community engagement. The project seeks to provide comprehensive training to the 240 CHI groups in areas such as management, financial literacy, and health insurance operations. By doing so, we aim to empower these groups to manage and benefit from Karin's insurance schemes effectively and sustainably. Additionally, the project is committed to increasing the accessibility of healthcare services for CHI group members, thereby addressing the healthcare needs of the underserved.
A series of activities were undertaken to achieve the project’s objectives. Outreaches were conducted across the Gulu region, providing CHI group leaders with essential skills in financial literacy, group health management, and the fundamentals of health insurance. These workshops were complemented by the distribution of training materials, financial management tools, and health insurance guides to all 240 CHI groups, ensuring they had the information needed to make informed health decisions.
While there has been progress, the project faced several challenges. Initially, there was resistance from some community members who were hesitant to join the CHI groups. This reluctance stemmed from a lack of understanding of the benefits of health insurance and poverty. To overcome this, the project team launched targeted awareness campaigns to educate the community and build trust. Additionally, limited financial resources posed a challenge, restricting the scale of some capacity-building activities. This highlighted the need for additional funding in future projects to expand the reach and impact of these initiatives.
The "Empowering 240 Cooperative Health Insurance Groups" project has made significant strides in strengthening community health insurance systems. By improving access to healthcare and ensuring the financial sustainability of the CHI groups, the project has had a positive impact on thousands of lives. The success of this project demonstrates the potential of cooperative health insurance to transform healthcare delivery in underserved communities. As the project looks to the future, the foundation has been set for continued growth and expansion, promising even greater impact in the years to come. However, to sustain and expand this impact, particularly in organizing community sensitization and increasing membership in the insurance schemes, additional funding is crucial. We invite further support to continue this vital work and ensure that more families benefit from accessible and affordable healthcare.
