Summary

This project will expand our counseling/mental health services to Neema students' guardians, which will improve their relationships with their spouses and families and create a safer environment for our students and their children to return home to. This project will provide mental health support sessions at the guardians' homes as well as monthly group counseling sessions at Neema for one year, impacting more than 500 individuals.

Challenge

Poverty in childhood and among adults can cause poor mental health through social stresses, stigma, and trauma. Unfortunately, access to mental health services in rural Kenya remains highly inadequate. Approximately 75% of Kenyans experiencing mental health issues do not receive the necessary care, with rural areas being particularly underserved which exacerbates the impact of poverty on families and communities, making some of the Neema students' homes not safe for them to go back to.

Solution

Through home visits and group counseling, Neema counselors will help the families of Neema's students address their problems and equip them with tools to face future challenges. This support enhances emotional well-being and strengthens relationships with spouses and children. Improved mental health also increases parents' ability to work effectively and fosters resilience, enabling them to better support their families and communities.

Long-Term Impact

By improving the mental and emotional well-being of our students' guardians, we bring restoration to them, their families, and their communities. The supportive community within such programs provides ongoing encouragement and accountability, contributing to sustained personal growth. As individuals thrive, they build stronger family bonds, increase their work productivity, and cultivate a more cohesive and resilient community, leading to long-term societal benefits.
