In Zimbabwe, children without birth certificates can face barriers to education, healthcare, social protections, inheritance and future opportunities. Through Exist to Exist, ZET and grassroots partner Trinity Project provide case support, community outreach and wide-reaching advocacy across three districts. Over 50% of children in Zimbabwe lack birth certificates. The crisis disproportionately affects women and girls, particularly in rural communities. Without legal identity, children face barriers to graduating school, accessing healthcare, welfare & police protection. Adults can be barred from formal work and voting. Registration can be complex and costly, especially for orphans of vulnerable families who may lack supporting documents, knowledge or money needed to navigate the complex process.
ZET in partnership with our grassroots partner, Trinity Project provide free advice and practical support to help vulnerable families secure birth certificates and other essential documents. Case officers trace relatives, obtain records, make home visits and help families navigate complex registration processes. We also raise awareness, train local partners and work with government and service providers to remove barriers, improve services and make birth registration easier for everyone.
A birth certificate gives a child a legal identity and can unlock education, healthcare, welfare services, protection and future opportunities. This project will directly support 600 complex cases this year, while strengthening local partners to help many more. By increasing community knowledge and improving registration systems, we create lasting change: families are better equipped to register future generations and fewer children grow up legally invisible.
