By Mukesh Muthaiya | Teach For India Fellow, Cohort of 2024
The past quarter, my classroom journey focused on strengthening academic growth while building student ownership, confidence, and leadership. Teaching seventh Grade and eighth Grade students in Chennai, I worked toward creating a classroom culture where learning extended beyond textbooks and encouraged students to think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and express themselves confidently.
One of the key highlights of this quarter was organizing a year-end showcase where students presented their learning through art and craft projects. The showcase was designed around themes of leadership, the Student Vision Scale, and English language development. Students confidently explained their projects, learning strategies, and reflections to parents and visitors. This experience helped students not only demonstrate academic understanding but also build confidence in communication, presentation, and self-expression. Writing became a major area of focus during this period. Students engaged in structured one-page reflective and critical writing exercises alongside daily vocabulary-building and reading practices. Learning circles and pair-based studying became consistent classroom routines that encouraged peer support and accountability. Over time, students showed significant improvement in their reading comprehension, writing clarity, and ability to express their thoughts critically and independently.
The classroom environment gradually evolved into a space where students actively supported one another and took greater ownership of their learning journey. In Mathematics, students demonstrated remarkable academic progress through consistent practice and targeted support. Nearly ninety-six percent of students scored above fifty percent in the end-of-year assessments, reflecting both improved conceptual understanding and growing confidence in the subject. However, supporting students who were still below grade level in reading remained a challenge. Around twenty percent of students required additional interventions and individualized support. To address this, I conducted focused foundational learning sessions and provided extra worksheets and guided practice opportunities. While gradual progress was visible, this continues to be an area requiring sustained effort and long-term support.
Beyond academics, students were given several opportunities for exposure and leadership development. They participated in Chennai School Kondattam 11.0, a sports and cultural event where students showcased their talents and built confidence beyond the classroom. Students also participated in Model United Nations sessions and entrepreneurship development programs, helping them strengthen communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills. These experiences created meaningful opportunities for students to explore their potential, engage with new ideas, and confidently represent themselves in larger public spaces. One of the most meaningful learnings from my Fellowship journey has been understanding that students possess immense potential when given the right support, exposure, and opportunities. Over time, my understanding of educational change has evolved to center around student ownership, consistent practice, and meaningful exposure beyond the classroom environment.
As I transition from the Fellowship, I aspire to continue contributing to the education sector by working within government systems while also building initiatives that focus on teaching Twenty-First Century Skills through entrepreneurship education. This journey has reaffirmed my belief that long-term transformation happens when students are empowered to think independently, lead confidently, and imagine possibilities beyond their immediate realities.
