By John Donald Raj Rose | Teach for India Fellow, Cohort of 2023
Hi! I'm John, a Year 2 fellow, I teach both Math and Science to amazing 6th graders. I'm originally from Nagercoil, India. I completed all my schooling there before heading to Chennai for college. Tech is my jam! I love gadgets and staying on top of the latest advancements. I've loved teaching since I was a kid. Helping others learn makes me understand things better myself and explore new things. Nearing the end of my PhD, I felt stuck staring at a screen all day, not using my other skills. Then I saw a TFI post on Instagram! It felt perfect - a place to use everything I know to teach students who wouldn't normally hear about the things I could take to the classroom.
The proudest moment of my TFI journey was definitely using technology in the classroom! Last year, I used smartphones to teach my students all kinds of new skills. This success made me much more confident about using even more technology in my lessons this year.
My students use a smartphone app called Khan Academy Kids to learn math and read stories. While some students might find apps like this challenging, I'm committed to using technology to make learning more effective for everyone in my classroom. They also dabbled with creating digital artwork with a smartphone app called Sketchbook, guided by a video tutorial I created especially for them!
