Vitamin A deficiency causes infants to succumb to diseases, particularly diarrheal diseases, which are a leading cause of death in children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. Vitamin A deficiency leads to anemia and blindness and increases the vulnerability of mothers and children. Worm infections cause and can worsen malnutrition and anemia, both of which have significant negative impacts on children of preschool age who are in a period of intense physical and mental growth.
MAP can administer these lifesaving treatments at the same time to dramatically reduce these children's susceptibility to disease. While children 5 and over often receive these interventions through school-based programs, children under 5 years old who are most at risk of death from disease do not receive these critical interventions. But it doesn't have to be this way. With your help we can stop this excruciating tragedy.
