The Not Guilty team got in the car for two hours, then had to leave it on the side of the road to get on a small truck for another 30 minutes since the road to the village was not paved.
We then got off the truck and walked for another 30 minutes until we got to the village where we would train 30 working women. The village has no electricity and no sanitation. They had warned us before that we were not to drink too much water, as we would not have been able to use a bathroom.
The training was to go on for three hours.
We first listened to the ladies discussing their problems with their husbands and children. Most complained that their husbands worked in another city all week and returned only on weekends. They had to be mothers and fathers, working and doing everything for their kids. When the husbands returned, they wanted undivided attention.
The women felt stressed and overwhelmed. Most had between four and eight children, all living in the same room.
As the trainer spoke about protecting our children from sexual abuse, we mentioned the concept of privacy and boundaries, and it was then that most women burst out, "Why are you telling us this? Our husbands need to hear this too. We cannot make this happen on our own."
They doubted their husbands would be willing to attend during their weekend, but surprisingly enough, they agreed.
The week after, we sent two male trainers to train the men. There were 30 men present. All the husbands!
"No one has ever taught us this before. Boundaries? Privacy? We are doing what we saw our parents and their parents before doing. You need to come back."
The fact was that so many nonprofits did not feel comfortable going because of the dire conditions in this village. But Not Guilty goes for the good of the people living there.
The Not Guilty team returned two more times and trained more.
The response was terrific. Whenever we returned, someone would come to tell us how he/she implemented what we taught the week before in their home.
We cannot do this without you. Villages like this are many in Egypt. Help us continue ding what we do: abolishing sexual abuse one person, one village at a time.
Thank you.
