Senora Celestine is almost 70. For her entire life she walked into the open sugar cane fields to relieve herself because she did not have a bathroom. When Etta Projects came to her community she told her husband that she wanted to participate in the project and build a bathroom for their family. Don Miguel complained that they had no money to pay the family share for the eco-composting latrine and Sra. Celestine was very sad, but determined to make something happen. She did not want to continue to go to the fields in fear of getting bitten by snakes or becoming sick from walking through the dirty mud in the rain and in the dark. She told her husband: I want my bathroom and I will pay the family share. He responded by saying he would not contribute a penny toward the project. Undeterred, Sra. Celestine told him: “Well, then you do not get to use my bathroom; it is only mine.” Don Miguel then agreed to pay for ½ of the family share. Sra. Celestine shared with us: “Now I have our bathroom and I am so very happy, Gracias!”
