Threatened by drought and famine

Ethiopia is not only the poorest, but also of the driest countries in the world. Again and again long droughts threatening people's lives, leading to a supply crisis. More than 80 percent of the 85 million inhabitants live in rural areas and practice agriculture and livestock - which depends on the rain livelihoods. But since the summer of 2015, the rain stays off more and more. The weather phenomenon El Nino aggravates the situation further. According to UN it's estimated, that currently more than 10 million are acutely affected by hunger and malnutrition. Especially children, pregnant women and nursing mothers need help urgently. Diakonia's partner organizations in Ethiopia are on site and provide humanitarian assistance. So malnourished infants and pregnant women are provided with vitamin-rich supplementary food, water points and fountains are repaired or food is distributed to secure the livestock as a nutritional basis.

Children are particularly affected by the drought. Around one third of the students can't take part at the teaching. Those who come to the class, are partly malnourished and can concentrate hard. Nevertheless, students often have to walk for hours to fetch water for themselves, their family and the school.

Together with the partner organization EOC DIDAC the DKH has secured access to drinking water for almost 2,900 people and more than 500 animals from Chefa and Gorgo Zuria in Ankober. The project involves the repairing of four fountains, and the establishment and guidance of water management committees. The project is compleeted with education about the use of water with livestocks and the necessary of hygiene.

For this work we need the strong support of you. Because every human being has the claim of a dignified life. Thank's a lot.
