Estudio Damgo’s fourth project with the Philippine Ports Authority serves a greater purpose for the community of Dumaguete City, a gateway to several tourist destinations and a hub for artists.
A few weeks ago, a delegation from the University of Washington visited Dumaguete and was brought to the Tourism Assistance and Information Center located near Dumaguete City’s seaport.
Guests were received by the staff at the said facility with the warmth of welcome as she gave them materials which contained the tourist destinations nearby. Questions from the guests were also entertained including the means of transportation and possible breakdown of expenses in going to the said destination.
The delegation’s head commented on the structure and on how it was built for the benefit of the community. He described it as a different level of activism, as the students translate their learning through tangible output to serve the community.
During the conversations, the guests noticed the use of bamboo as material to input a unique and local flavor to the structure. They also appreciated the point on sustainability because bamboo is available within the community, it can easily be replaced once it will decay.
The design of the facility is itself a display of sustainable architecture and is a showcase of how native materials can be utilized to give a more aesthetic appeal.
Estudio Damgo IV now serves as a showcase not only for the nearby destinations but it also displays the art of creativity and design with the use of native materials.
