Report #5: 2.000 Sterilizations of Dogs and Cats in Colombia by 2026

1. Context and problem: The reality in 2026

In 2026, the crisis of stray animals in Colombia remains at critical levels. It is estimated that almost three million dogs and cats survive unprotected throughout the country. Although the problem is highly visible in the main capitals and tourist destinations – such as Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta – the reality is equally devastating in small cities and rural areas, where abandonment does not let up.

The driver of this crisis continues to be the lack of mass sterilization and irresponsible ownership, driven by impulse purchases or adoptions. Without reproductive control, the animal population grows exponentially. This condemns thousands of sentient beings to daily mistreatment, hunger and disease, while triggering serious public health problems such as zoonoses, bite attacks and traffic accidents.

The current challenge

Colombia has pioneering legal tools, such as Law 1774 of 2016 that criminalizes abuse and abandonment. However, in the middle of 2026, the challenges of implementation, budget and geographical coverage by the State remain immense. The streets and shelters are overcrowded. This is why our 2,000 sterilizations project is an urgent and vital intervention: where laws have not yet arrived with concrete actions, the support of our donors acts immediately to cut the cycle of suffering at the root.

2.Shipping: Sterilizationastheultimate solution

Mass sterilization campaigns are the most effective and humane strategy to mitigate this crisis. Although the Sterilization to Save Lives Law was approved in the country, its formal implementation has been slow and almost non-existent in small and remote municipalities.

Faced with this situation, the Inawy Foundation continues to work actively in the territory. We take free days directly to peripheral areas where access to veterinary services is limited or non-existent. We not only attend to the consequences of abandonment, we prevent it from happening.

3. Results obtained (First Quarter 2026)

Thank you for your trust and support! During the first quarter of 2026, we managed to carry out 182 free and successful sterilizations.

5. Characteristics of the population: Exponential prevention

The demographic analysis of the animals cared for in this period shows the following characteristics:

• Species: 71% felines and 29% canines.
• Sex: 62% females and 38% males.

Focusing our efforts mainly on females (62%) responds to a high-impact strategy. A single female dog and her offspring can generate up to 3,618 offspring in seven years, while a female cat and her lineage can procreate up to 420,000 offspring in the same period. By sterilizing 112 females in just three months, we were able to mathematically prevent the birth of thousands of animals destined for suffering and oblivion.
