Our work is increasingly demonstrating that sustainable child protection cannot depend on children alone. Caregivers must also have the knowledge, confidence and practical skills necessary to create safer and more supportive households. Through community engagement and caregiver empowerment activities, families are gaining tools to better respond to the needs of children under their care.
Caregivers are learning about child rights, positive parenting, education support, nutrition, health, protection from abuse and the importance of listening to children. These conversations are helping transform caregivers from passive recipients of assistance into active participants in child wellbeing.
Empowerment also means helping families strengthen their ability to cope with poverty. Where possible, caregivers are encouraged to explore practical livelihood opportunities and household strategies that can improve stability. A stronger caregiver is better positioned to keep children in school, provide food and seek medical assistance when needed.
Donor support enables these activities to reach families who often have limited access to formal training and support services.
The impact extends beyond one child. When a caregiver gains knowledge, that knowledge can benefit siblings, relatives and other children within the household. When caregivers begin working together, entire communities can develop stronger informal protection networks.
Investing in caregivers is investing in the people who remain with children long after a project activity has ended. With continued donor partnership, we can strengthen families, build community resilience and ensure that more vulnerable children grow up surrounded by adults equipped to protect, guide and encourage them.
