Changing the experience of menstruation for girls requires more than providing menstrual materials. It requires changing the conversations surrounding menstruation. When girls grow up believing that their periods are embarrassing or something they should not discuss, they may struggle to seek help when they need it.
F SSIBU Mission Foundation is engaging parents through Keep Her in School to help change this environment. We encourage parents to communicate openly with girls about menstruation, listen to their concerns, and provide guidance without shame or judgment.
This family engagement complements our direct support to girls. We provide menstrual materials and mentorship while supporting vulnerable schools with water cans and handwashing detergents. Together, these interventions address both the practical and social barriers girls can face.
Mentorship gives girls opportunities to learn about menstrual health and hygiene, build confidence, and understand how to manage their periods responsibly. Providing appropriate materials can reduce some of the practical difficulties associated with menstrual poverty, while parent engagement helps address the stigma that can surround menstruation.
We are working to expand these interventions to more schools in vulnerable communities.
Donors have an important role in making this possible. Their support can help us reach more girls with menstrual materials, strengthen school hygiene resources, conduct mentorship activities, and engage more parents in meaningful conversations.
When a parent learns to speak openly, a girl gains someone she can trust. When a school has the resources to support her, she gains dignity. When donors invest in both, they help create a stronger environment for girls to remain engaged in education.
