A girl should be able to ask questions about her menstrual health without feeling ashamed. However, menstrual stigma can make many girls uncomfortable discussing their periods with parents, teachers, or other trusted adults. When this silence is combined with limited access to menstrual materials and hygiene facilities, menstruation can become a serious obstacle to consistent school participation.
Through Keep Her in School, F SSIBU Mission Foundation is creating spaces where girls can receive both practical assistance and mentorship. We provide menstrual materials while using mentorship sessions to help girls understand their bodies, manage menstruation confidently, and develop the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their wellbeing and education.
Our work also recognizes that menstrual dignity requires more than materials. Schools need access to water and hygiene supplies. That is why we are supporting vulnerable schools with water cans and handwashing detergents, helping create a more supportive environment for girls.
At the family level, we engage parents in conversations about menstrual stigma. Parents are encouraged to listen to their daughters, answer questions respectfully, and avoid language that makes menstruation something to hide.
We are working toward expanding these activities to more schools across the vulnerable communities we serve.
For every girl reached, the goal is simple: less shame, greater knowledge, better hygiene, and stronger confidence to remain in school.
With donor partnership, we can reach more girls who are experiencing menstrual poverty and help ensure that menstruation does not stand between them and their education.
