Our Equipping Youth for Sustainable Livelihoods program is helping to challenge long-standing negative beliefs and social attitudes that limit girls’ education in the communities we serve. In some households, girls have traditionally been viewed primarily through the lens of domestic responsibilities, early marriage, or dependency, with education and economic empowerment sometimes considered less important for them. Our program is helping communities see girls differently—as capable learners, future professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders, and contributors to household and community development.
By combining skills development, mentorship, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and life-skills education, we demonstrate that investing in girls’ education and abilities can create lasting social and economic value. Girls who gain practical skills and confidence are better positioned to make informed decisions, pursue livelihood opportunities, and contribute to their families rather than being defined by the limitations placed upon them.
The program is also creating opportunities for parents, caregivers, community members, and young people to witness the capabilities of girls firsthand. As girls acquire skills, demonstrate leadership, participate in income-generating activities, and confidently engage in community life, perceptions begin to change. Education is increasingly viewed not as a cost or unnecessary investment for girls, but as a powerful pathway to independence, dignity, and sustainable development.
Most importantly, the program is helping girls believe in their own potential. When a girl is equipped with knowledge, skills, confidence, and opportunity, she can challenge the expectations that once limited her—and inspire other girls to pursue education and build their own futures.
With continued donor and community support, we aim to expand this work so that more girls can overcome social and economic barriers, remain connected to learning, acquire marketable skills, and become economically empowered women who contribute meaningfully to stronger and more resilient communities.
