The first 1,000 days of a child's life are crucial because this is the stage in which the foundations for physical and mental growth are laid. The nutrition a child receives will determine whether he or she develops healthily or not. These first few years will determine the nutritional health of a child for the rest of his or her life.
In northern Argentina, there are approximately 500 indigenous communities belonging to more than 14 indigenous peoples who live in conditions of structural poverty and discrimination, with severe restrictions on access to the health system and basic services such as drinking water. Some 7,500 children up to five years of age are at nutritional risk. A malnourished child is more likely to develop diseases and has greater difficulty in achieving a good quality of life in the future.
In the Malnutrition Prevention and Care Program, we combat malnutrition in children under 5 years of age. An interdisciplinary team of professionals cares for and closely monitors the health status of each child in the program. We take a comprehensive approach to children's social problems, training and working with mothers, since they are the main caregivers for children.
