Summary

The Calestous Juma Innovation and Resource Hub (CJ Hub) is located on the shores of Lake Victoria in rural Kenya. At the CJ Hub, students gain computer and digital literacy skills, two crucial components of personal and economic success. For these young adults, the CJ Hub is their only resource to learn about and access computers. With your help, the CJ Hub will expand its courses and digital resources, bringing digital equity to this rural region. Examples of what your giving can do are listed.

Challenge

Lake Victoria is the largest of Africa's great freshwater lakes and the cornerstone of a regional economy that supports over 45 million people. The surrounding region is experiencing poverty, and local youth do not have a chance to pull themselves out of it. As a result, Lake Victoria's resources remain underutilized, and poverty persists because residents lack the skills, knowledge, and computer access to participate fully in today's digital world. At the CJ Hub, we are changing this narrative.

Solution

This project will provide essential 21st century skills and motivation to youth who otherwise cannot access computer and digital literacy skills. Youth are trained in Microsoft Office suite, internet usage, and they can access a vast digital library of locally relevant topics. This project will also teach our students about online safety and responsible media use. Students will be mentored and supported to take the next steps toward further education and lifting themselves out of poverty.

Long-Term Impact

Through this project, over 100 young adults will be empowered to create successful businesses, pursue higher education, and thrive economically within the Lake Victoria region. This will have positive social and economic ripple effects in the local area and beyond, especially for youth and women who have historically been left out and left behind. Examples of what your giving can do are listed here. The project will empower these young people to conquer the poverty of their circumstances.
