Deep Ecology Education Program

Because of you, a group of young people in Richmond is learning something the job market rarely teaches: how to create opportunity rather than simply compete for it.

Our K'iche partner, Don Audelino Sac Cuyo, poses a question that reframes everything we do. He asks students plainly: "Are you learning to be happy in school?" It sounds simple. It is not. Most education prepares young people to chase jobs, to rank, to win a scarce prize. Don Audelino asks whether school is teaching them to flourish — to build what his people call Utz Kaslamal, the good and beautiful life.

That question sits at the heart of the Deep Ecology Education Program.

DEEP invites students to move away from a purely transactional view of the world — where everything is measured, priced, and competed for — toward a relational one. We call this Buen Vivir: living well, together, in genuine connection to community and place. It is not soft idealism. It is a practical foundation for a meaningful future. Students who learn to see relationships, not just transactions, become the people who build things that last.

Nowhere is this clearer than at Carytown Commons, our real-world learning lab in the heart of Richmond. Here, students do far more than study. They manage projects, launch ventures, and learn to work with real civic partners — the City Council, the Carytown Merchants Association, local businesses, and neighbors. They discover how a permit gets approved, how a shared public space is negotiated, and how an idea becomes a working reality.

These are hard skills — project management, budgeting, entrepreneurship. But something deeper is happening alongside them. Students are learning that their gifts can generate opportunities for a whole community, not just a paycheck for themselves. They are learning to plant, rather than to scramble.

This fall, that vision comes alive at our first Richmond Bay Harvest Festival, a celebration of the Chesapeake watershed and the people who care for it. For our students, it is a living classroom. They are the organizers, the problem-solvers, the hosts. They will feel what it means to create shared abundance — to make a gathering where a community grows richer in every sense of the word.

And that is the transformation your support makes possible. A young person who once believed success meant beating everyone else begins to imagine a different life: one of contribution, creativity, and belonging. One where the answer to Don Audelino's question is finally yes — yes, I am learning to be happy here, because I am learning to build a life worth living.
