A new school year brought new and returning students to the HSP club at Virginia Commonwealth University. With an increase in membership, the club was able to contribute more to beautifying surrounding areas as well as creating community on campus.
One of the larger projects the club worked on was a collaborative installation with Community High School. By working with the school, the club was able to winterize the pollinator garden they installed last spring. Winterizing protects the garden from frigid temperatures and prepares the soil for the following spring. With your support, we have been able to supply the club with the materials they need to properly prepare the garden for the winter. This continuous collaboration has allowed both members of Community High School and the HSP club to see the continuous growth of the garden throughout the seasons.
The club has also worked on trash pickups. On warmer fall days, the club participated in trash pickup walks around the VCU and surrounding area. It not only helped beautify and clean the area but provided new opportunities for students. With these walks, students could explore areas off-campus they would not have gone to otherwise. Donations to the deep ecology program provided students with the supplies they need to help spruce up the community.
In addition to community projects, the club has already started fundraising for the spring trip to Guatemala. On campus, the club has hosted bake sales and pumpkin painting. They have also tabled at our annual Rally in the Alley event with a ring toss and pumpkin-smashing game.
