"As a Mother, I know that The first five years of a child's life are the foundation that shapes the child’s future health, happiness, growth, development, learning and achievement at school. I am happy that Journey House Actions Rwanda is helping me achieve that for my child and occupy them when I am busy making money for my family at work." a Mother to one of our children beneficiaries said during our monthly meeting with the children's parents and beneficiaries.

Before the creation of our New Early Childhood Development Center, Mothers in Gashora Sector, bread winners for almost 3 to 5 kids each, used to perform their daily work with their kids their back and leaving others locked behind the door until 1:30 PM when they get back home. Today, they appreciate the work of the ECD since they are able to leave their kids learning, playing with their peers, protected and having access to food.

The New ECD is Up and Running today! JHA Leadership appreciates the collaboration the center has with the children's parents. He defines parent involvement in ECD as “participation of parents in regular, two-way and meaningful communication between the home and ECD centre activities that ensure that (a)parents play an integral role in assisting the child’s learning; (b) parents are fully included in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the development of the child”.

Parent participation can be referred to as “as a working relationship characterised by a shared sense of purpose.” JHA will keep working regularly with the children purpose to make sure that the Kids keep the same learning and eating track even when they are home.

Thanks to you who is supporting us in giving this kids an opportunity and a future. We are grateful!

Sending you "Ubuntu & Love"

Every child deserves the best start in life and the opportunity to thrive. We are excited to update you that our New Early Childhood Development Center had Opened! The Center is designed in a way it has the children classrooms, a library, a food bank, children play grounds for both games and child stimulation activities, Vegetable Garden, and the administration offices.

The new ECD is about supporting a child in these critical early years, providing holistic access to early learning, good nutrition, hygiene and protection. Currently it is able to accomodate 250 children of Gashora Village. We enrolled children beneficiaries according to the survey results of the household outreach made to find out who fits the eligibility criteria the most. JHA established to prioritize who is served first since the Center will not be able to accommodate all potential beneficiaries.  JHA focused on the most vulnerable children in the most vulnerable households so they have access to early childhood education as a foundation for breaking the chain of poverty in their lives.

We belive that A child’s brain develops rapidly during the early years, and lost opportunities might never be redeemed. JHA gives that opportunity to Gashora Children to come to school every day to learn and interract with their peers. Not only that, they also receive a Breakfast and Lunch everyday at school which plays a bigger role in fighting mulnutrition in their lives.

With gratitude we would like to thank each and every donor who contributed to the construction and operation of our wonderful new Early Childhood Development Center.  We share the belief that Children need access to organised early learning opportunities. Your investment has started to transform the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.  We are most humbled by your kindness.

Sending you all "Ubuntu and Love"

Journey House Actions Rwanda (JHA), in partnership with a local construction company, is working on the final touches of our new Early Childhood Development (ECD) Center including painting and designing the children’s playground for both games and child stimulation activities.

During the COVID 19 pandemic many local Rwandans lost their jobs, and in our small economy, women lost even more jobs due to lockdowns and the resulting economic crisis. During this crisis, our Center focused on supporting and employing local community members with a special emphasis on employing women and teenage mothers. The ECD construction project provided employment to more than 300 workers of which more than 60% have been women.

JHA continued to support the community of Gashora during the pandemic and the new ECD Center has already spearheaded several activities even though it is not yet fully completed.  The Center has already attracted more than 200 children who come to play and participate in activities at the Center. We feed eggs to 200 plus vulnerable children at the new Center to fight malnutrition.

The leader of the Karutete Village, Mr. Celestine, said “This new ECD Center has come as a true blessing to our community and we are extremely excited to see our children joining the new Center. My only concern is that the Center won’t be able to accommodate all the 3000 plus potential beneficiaries who need services, all at the same time.”

Upon completion, the new ECD will be able to accommodate 250 children of Gashora village. JHA is already conducting household outreach to make sure that enrolled children beneficiaries fit the eligibility criteria JHA established to prioritize who is served first since the Center will not be able to accommodate all potential beneficiaries.  JHA will focus on the most vulnerable children in the most vulnerable households so they have access to early childhood education as a foundation for breaking the chain of poverty in their lives.

One of the mothers to the already enrolled children, Mrs. Mukashyaka, said “Our children are more open minded since they joined the journey of success and the increased support from Journey House is very critical to the growth of our families.”

With gratitude we would like to thank each and every donor who contributed to the construction and operation of our wonderful new Early Childhood Development Center.  Your investment will transform the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.  We are most humbled by your kindness.

In Rwanda, we believe children are the future of our community, but they are also the most affected by the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi - some became orphans, some traumatized and some were made homeless. The resulting high poverty rates in Gashora limit access to early childhood development (ECD) centers and education.  Investing in early childhood development is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality.

Today, Journey House Actions (JHA) Rwanda impacts directly more than 1,000 families and more than 4,000 community members, through our education, health, WASH and feeding programs, and most recently, our COVID-19 interventional food basket. We continue to develop strong relationships in our local communities and with the government in Gashora.  Therefore, we are able to promote awareness about child rights and protection.

We serve more than 120 children in our existing Early Childhood Development Center in Gashora village but demand far exceeds our current capacity. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of our donor investors, we began construction of another Early Childhood Development Center in Gashora village that will provide a safe, fun and productive space to educate and serve another 250 children.  This Center will help our children reach their boundless potential.

Project Update & Success

The construction of our new ECD center started earlier this year but was temporally halted due to government restrictions in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic.  Rwanda was one of the first African states to implement lockdowns within the country and at its border.

As a result of the COVID-19 restrictions, unemployment in our community exceeded 60%.  In order to support our community in these trying times we tried to hire as many local people as possible to work on the construction of the ECD center.  This project provided more than 70 part-time construction and site preparation jobs to single mothers and youth living in Gashora, providing them with the resources to purchase medical insurance, buy food and pay utilities.

Despite the temporary setback due to COVID-19, our local community construction company recently reported that the Center should still be completed by September 2020. They already laid the bricks for the building foundation and are in the process of cleaning the site and getting more materials on the site.

Thanks to the generous past and future investment in this project by our donors through GlobalGiving we will be able to complete construction of the Center, hire staff and purchase needed supplies allowing us to educate children below five years of age so they can thrive and reach their boundless potential.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
