This project will equip 200 young mothers who have been married off at an early age with sustainable entrepreneurship and leadership skills in order for them to start businesses or secure employment.
Young females in slum dwellings face numerous challenges as they transit from adolescence into adulthood. They find themselves in rather hostile environment characterized by unemployment, poor housing, large family sizes, violence, crime, drug and alcohol abuse, poor education facilities and lack of recreational activities. This situation subjects adolescents in the slums to early sexual activities three years earlier than adolescents who live in non slum parts.
This programme seeks to offer business training and computer skills to equip young mothers with entrepreneurship and computer skills in order for them to engage in income generating activities successfully. The leadership component of the programme will help the young mother gain confidence, provide correct information, clarify values and reinforce positive attitudes, and strengthen decision-making and communication skills among the young mothers.
The project will train, mentor and fund 200 young mothers allowing them to start sustainable businesses in order for them to provide for themselves and their families. Additionally, for the young mothers who are not able to start a business, the project will equip them with employment skills in order for them to build confidence in job search. The project will also help reduce high case of gender based violence, crime and drug abuse among women and girls.
