ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION IN BUSOGA SUB REGION

Summary

Deforestation has had negative impacts such as climate change, reduced environmental services such as watershed and soil protection, reduced biodiversity, a threat to wild life and caused a reduced supply of wood and non-wood Forestry products. There is a growing demand for forest products, and a growing shortfall in supply, based on current investment levels. As per the project we are to have environmental conservation campaigns to sensitize, train, and facilitate communities to plant trees.

Challenge

Effects of Global climate change and global warming are bringing harm to human communities and natural world, further temperature rises have a devastating impact and more action is urgently required. Factors such as food and cash crop production, high population growth rates, demand for fuel and poverty etc. have led to deforestation in Busoga region. The project is aimed at empowering community capacity to participate in eradication of encroachment on and destruction of trees and forest.

Solution

We shall, - Plant 1000,000 trees in Busoga region. - Have environmental education to mitigate on forest destruction and to reverse desertification. - Form community environmental protection champion teams - Develop appropriate messages for communities with focus on awareness creation on proper disposal of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials. - Empower communities for improved household livelihood. - Promote food security so as to elude occurrences of famine in the Busoga sub region.

Long-Term Impact

- Increased number of barriers to wind that reduce soil erosion and destruction of crops. - Improved livelihood through sale of wood products and fruits. - Climate stabilization - Increased number of shade trees in gazette resting places. - Improved community knowledge on climate change issues, supporting adaptation practices that reduce the impact of climatic change on people's livelihoods. - Reduction of pressure on protected areas such as forest reserves, game reserves and wetlands.
