LULAC plans to organize a Latino Environmental Ambassadors Program to promote hands-on education on sustainable practices and raise environmental consciousness in their local communities. The program will use cultural references that resonate with members to explain ways that households can move to be more environmentally aware. LULAC will also explain the effects that climate change has on our communities. Each family will be gifted with materials to start their journey.
Everyone is impacted by pollution but pollution doesn't impact everyone equally. Latino communities are disproportionally affected. One-half of Latinos live in three states that are already experiencing serious effects related to climate change: historic droughts in California, record-breaking heat waves in Texas, and increased sea-level rise and flooding in Florida. Not enough resources and investments are available to the Latino community and there is especially a lack of materials in Spanish.
LULAC will designate members to be ambassadors in their communities. These ambassadors provide education on environmental issues in English and Spanish, in a series of workshops. The community members are educated in environmental impacts and sustainable, environmentally friendly practices.
The long-term impact includes the reversal of the increasing Carbon footprint, improvement in the overall health of the human being and the decrease of environmental degradation. All of this, while also increasing awareness and education in the Latino communities.
