Spotlight on Disability Rights: The 35th Anniversary of the “Wheels of Justice” Campaign
Last month marked the 35th anniversary of the “Wheels of Justice” campaign, a defining moment in the fight for disability rights. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was stalled in Congress when, on March 12, 1990,the disability rights group,ADAPT, organized a powerful march from the White House to the U.S. Capitol. The march culminated in the Capitol Crawl, wherearound 475 disability rights activists left behind their mobility aids and crawled up the Capitol steps to highlight the accessibility barriers they faced. Their chant, “Access is our civil right,” put pressure on Congress to act. Just a few months later, on July 26, 1990, the ADA was signed into law.

As we reflect on the courage and determination of those who fought for accessibility, Disability Belongs™ continues to push for progress. In 2025, we are focused on eliminating barriers to opportunity and independence, promoting equitable employment and advancement, supporting inclusive learning and education-to-work transitions, advancing accessibility best practices across sectors, and driving civic engagement and advocacy.

Living Our Mission: How We Build a Disability-Led Culture of Support
As a proudly disability-led organization, we don’t simply advocate for inclusion—we embody it. The majority of our board and staff are people with disabilities. By centering the leadership and expertise of disabled individuals, we create solutions that are more effective, sustainable, and impactfulThis lived experience shapes our approach, grounding the policies we champion and the programs we develop in real-world expertise.

We are transforming systems, breaking down barriers, and challenging outdated stigmas. This work begins internally, where we prioritize livable wages, safe work environments, and policies that empower our team to do their best work. Our commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and belonging is woven into every facet of our organization, and we continuously challenge our own biases and improve to uphold our mission.

Your support makes this vital work possible, and together, we are building a future where disability inclusion is not just the goal—it’s the reality. Thank you for being an integral part of this movement.
