Farmers teaching their fellow farmers is the best model of spreading sustainable agriculture and of multiplying the good production practices in the communities towards achieving food security.
In 2009, we had conducted a training of trainors to some Central Visayas farmers who have been selected by their fellow farmers. Each farmer was a scholar of their farmers organization and of some funds from donors.
"I have to leave my vegetable garden and it has to be watered everyday and on tuesday and thursday I have to harvest so it can be sold in the local market. It is very difficult for me to go away but my fellow farmers gave their trust in me that I can train them the way that I will be trained here... They've shouldered my responsibilities and created a schedule so that each of them can attend to my vegetable garden while I'm away ... so that my family will not hunger even if I'm away. In a way, I am now a scholar of my organization."
--- Benhamina ; Farmer from Cebu
There are other trainings through the years that we have done. Each farmer who have been trainors have helped so much in the improvement of food production of their organizations' members.
Last October 15-16, these farmers have helped in the conduct of a Sustainable Agriculture Fair in one of the communities to show their gains. The event is timed with the celebration of World Food Day to show how they have developed into a self-reliant community and that they have now achieved a certain level of food security.
There are a lot of things still be done, and you, our family from the Global Giving Community is a big part of this dream which is now becoming a reality --- Self-reliant farming communities and food security to all!
