This project will support a preschool of 25 children between 3-6 years old for a whole year in poor mountainous area of China. The project will help children to receive an equal opportunity of preschool education. The purpose of this project is to prevent poor children from becoming poor adults. The project will help children prepare on how best to study in future and in life - a better start for tomorrow. The Preschools of the Future program was initiated by Humana People to People.
In the most remote areas of China little of the economic growth and increasing welfare can be felt. An estimated 27.3 million children between the ages of 6 to 17 years old drop out of school (UNICEF China, 2008). Yunnan is China's largest poverty-stricken area and the most populous province. In Zhenkang there is only one kindergarten in the county capital. However in remote mountainous rural areas there are no preschools. Therefore children from these areas easily drop out of school.
We make use of closed down schools in natural villages by renovating them into beautiful classrooms. The project will train local selected young people to become preschool teachers. In the preschools, children will be taught Mandarin Chinese in preparation for primary school education. Children and teachers will also be exploring the nature, the villages and the world. Every child will be served a nutritious breakfast at the preschool.
Children have a good foundation in life-a better start-being creativity and learning good hygiene habits, thus have a positive impact to the local community. The project will establish a preschool model for the rural area. The project will promote early childhood education with cooperation from the government with an aim that the government will change its policy and makes early childhood education obligatory.
