ThePig Project is a community-based initiative aimed at improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers by providing them with piglets for rearing. The project seeks to enhance food security, generate income, and promote sustainable livestock farming practices among smallholder farmers. By distributing piglets to farmers, the project will create a ripple effect of economic empowerment especially among the women, which will promote sustainable livelihoods among farmers for a better living.
Smallholder farmers and women in Hoima face persistent poverty due to limited and unreliable income-generating opportunities. Many households depend primarily on small-scale crop farming, which is vulnerable to climate variability, low soil productivity, and fluctuating market prices. Although pig farming is a viable and profitable enterprise, many farmers are unable to engage in it due to high start-up costs, particularly the cost of acquiring quality piglets.
The project will distribute high-quality piglets, particularly women and youths. It will thereby removing the primary barrier to entry, the high cost of acquiring starter livestock. This enables vulnerable households to immediately engage in this viable income-generating activity. The project therefore addresses one of the root causes of low household income and limited livelihood opportunities.
The project is expected to contribute to sustained household income growth among smallholder farmers, particularly women and youths. As the project expands through the Pay-It-Forward System, more and more beneficiaries will diversify their income sources and reduce dependence on unpredictable subsistence crop farming.
