English Education for Rural Children in China

By Sebastien Carrier, Ph.D | Program Director

As the Spring Festival approaches, we reflect on the past year — a journey marked by learning, collaboration, success, and a sharp rebound in our activities. We want to take a moment to celebrate the milestones that we achieved in 2023.

In 2023, our online English teaching program experienced a significant increase in volunteer and student enrollment, reaching rural and under-served children in Guangdong, Ningxia, Jiangxi, Henan, Fujian, Yunnan, Guangxi, and Anhui provinces.Throughout the year, more than 400 volunteers and teachers delivered an impressive total of 4,709 online English lessons to 4,897 under-served students. Compared with 2022, we are pleased to report that we have increased by 49.5% our number of beneficiaries, thus enabling more students to acquire knowledge and make progress in their language skills.

Our curriculum is centered around using interactive activities, stories, picture books, and songs to provide students with the opportunity to practice vocabulary, sentences, and dialogues. Many learning games are incorporated into each class to make the students’ language learning more colorful, and so they can more confidently use English to express themselves. Phonics learning materials are also used by many volunteers to help students improve their oral English.

In these unprecedented times, we especially want to thank all of you, our volunteers, donors, and other supporters. We need your support more than ever to keep our programs running sustainably in 2024. We sincerely thank all of you, and wish everyone good health, good luck, and much happiness! We look forward to working with you in the Year of the Dragon!
