CHIME FOR CHANGE and Equality Now will support local partners and activists to ensure that laws are equal, prohibit violence against women and girls, and provide equal access to justice. This project will empower and support activists from across the Middle East and North Africa (including Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia) to develop and execute national advocacy campaigns to repeal discriminatory laws that perpetuate violence against women and girls.
Even before the COVID-19 crisis, numerous sex discriminatory laws across the region resulted in violence against women and girls being perpetuated by legal frameworks. Now, as the pandemic exacerbates existing vulnerabilities and inequalities, governments are shifting priorities and resources to respond to the immediate health crisis, leaving women and girls more vulnerable and exposed to the extremes of the crisis.
With your help, Equality Now and CHIME FOR CHANGE will ensure women and girls are supported to advocate for change. Over the coming year, we will provide logistical and legal expertise to advocacy campaigns in these vulnerable states; connect emerging and experienced activists with women MPs to develop their leadership, analysis and campaign skills; and provide training on advocacy and campaigning in vulnerable states where access to such training is very limited.
Equality Now works with grassroots partners around the world to ensure that laws treat men and women equally, prohibit all forms of violence against women and girls, and that women and girls have equal access to justice. We know that lasting change happens through supporting and promoting the activism of women and girls on the ground and by helping institutionalize equality in laws, policies and institutions.
