Omega is a small organisation with a huge mission. We work to prevent human rights violations - including torture - being committed using military, security, and police equipment. Our research is used to support campaigns, legal actions, and advocacy efforts that successfully challenge the use of unlawful force by governments. Our resources and expertise empower others to demand justice and accountability, amplifying the impact of our work.
Around the world, officials use violence to commit human rights abuses, including torture and other ill-treatment against peaceful protesters and in places of detention. Often, they use specialist law enforcement weapons and equipment such as tear gas, batons, rubber bullets, and electric shock weapons. A lack of transparency and understanding of these types of equipment and their use can hinder accountability and justice, allowing abusive practices to persist and survivors to remain voiceless.
We will empower civil society, journalists, and legal professionals to identify, document, and challenge the use of law enforcement weapons to violate human rights. Through specialised training and expert support, stakeholders will gain skills and knowledge to hold officials to account for misuse of force. Our research and expertise will inform policy-makers and help drive meaningful change regulating the trade and use of law enforcement equipment at national, regional, and international levels.
Despite our small size, Omega has a big impact. Since our establishment over 30 years ago, our research, resources, and trainings have helped to drive meaningful policy change, strengthen oversight globally, and empower civil society. Our work helps to foster an environment where victims can find justice, officials are held to account, and people are free to exercise their human rights without the threat of state violence and repression.
