Dear Supporters and Well-Wishers,
We bring you urgent news regarding the worsening HIV/AIDS situation in Cameroon. Reports from the region indicate that the price of HIV medication has significantly increased, with a single dose now costing between 10,000FRS CFA (est.$20) and 15,000 CFA francs (est.$30). Patients, who require at least two doses per month, must now spend approximately 25,000 CFA francs (est.$50 )to maintain their treatment. Previously, these life-saving drugs were heavily subsidized by international donors.
The situation has been exacerbated by the withdrawal of U.S. government support through USAID and WHO, and the ongoing civil war in English speaking regions of Cameroon which has left thousands of individuals vulnerable. Without access to affordable antiretroviral treatment, the spread of HIV is expected to accelerate at an alarming rate. Reports estimate that one in every four individuals may be affected if immediate intervention is not taken.
Urgent Preventive Measures:
We call upon international partners, healthcare organizations, and compassionate individuals to support efforts in providing accessible HIV treatment and prevention resources. JRFIUSA remains committed to advocating for the health and well-being of communities in Cameroon as well.
