End Gender-Based Violence Against Women Journalist

Summary

Women journalists in Nigeria face gender-based violence, including harassment, threats, online abuse, intimidation, discrimination, and sexual harassment while carrying out their work. These challenges can force some women to limit their reporting, leave the profession, or avoid covering sensitive issues. This project will provide safety training, documentation of abuses, advocacy, and emergency assistance to help women journalists work safely and continue contributing to independent journalism.

Challenge

Women journalists in Nigeria face gender-based violence both online and offline, including harassment, threats, intimidation, discrimination, cyberbullying, and sexual harassment. These abuses can affect their safety, mental health, and ability to work freely. Many incidents go unreported, while victims have limited access to legal, safety, and support services. As a result, some women withdraw from reporting or avoid important public interest stories.

Solution

This project will provide women journalists with safety training, legal assistance, digital security support, counseling referrals, and emergency assistance when they face gender-based violence. It will also document cases of abuse, raise public awareness, and advocate for stronger protections within media organizations and society. These activities will help women journalists work more safely, report freely, and remain active in the profession.

Long-Term Impact

The project will help create a safer and more inclusive environment for women journalists in Nigeria. Increased access to protection, legal support, and safety resources can reduce barriers that prevent women from working freely. More women will be able to pursue journalism careers, report on public issues, and contribute diverse perspectives to the media. This can strengthen press freedom, gender equality, and public access to information.
