It is true that tradition and culture are important aspects of any society in helping to mold the views and behavioral patterns of the society; some traditions and cultural practices like FGM are harmful and must be abolished. There is a need for legislation in Nigeria with health education and female emancipation in the society. The process of social change in the community with a collective coordinated agreement to abandon the practice "community-led action" is therefore essential.
Female genital mutilation is known to exist especially in many third world countries including Nigeria with many women being victims of this harmful practice and its complications. The practice is rife in Southeast Nigeria. Women suffer from FGM as young children from the operation, at the time of their marriage as adults and later during their child delivery. Female genital mutilation has detrimental effects on the physical & psychological health of the infants, girl-children and women operated
Advocacy will be carried out at different community levels to ensure that the child reproductive rights are protected and preserved. Educational teachings/trainings will be carried out so that more women will be informed of the gross implications of this practice. Radio programmes and jingles will also be used to ensure that more people will be reached with this intervention. Structural reform towards Female Genital mutilation is the major aim of this project so as to gaurantee sustainability.
More women will be saved from the gross implications of this practice. When a Girl-Child is saved from this, a woman has been saved from a continuous life of pain and vulnerability. The benefit of this intervention will be enjoyed by the girl-child and the woman she will become for a life-time. The impact of the transference and sustenance of this policy could be positively overwhelming.
