About half of Palestinian women and girls in Israel have experienced gender-based digital violence like blackmailing, harassment, or hate speech. Kayan empowers victims to speak up, and not face digital violence alone. Through our emergency and support hotline, we provide psychological and legal counselling and support to individual victims. Through workshops, events, and campaigns, we raise public awareness, break the taboo, generate a conversation and develop skills for mutual support.
Studies have shown alarming rates of digital SGBV against Palestinian women and girls in Israel, such as cyber bulling and harassment on social media. Kayan has also seen a stark increase in calls to our support hotline in cases of online blackmailing, abuse and violence, and we have witnessed online hate speech at all levels of our work. Besides the psychological effects, Palestinian women and girls face victim-blaming, and such issues are considered taboo in the Palestinian society.
This project will provide knowledge on identifying and dealing with digital violence through workshops, events, and campaigns. With these activities we will help women and girls be better protected, break the taboo and generate discussions. We also support victims through our hotline. We work with white-hat hackers who can find the attacker, while we find a safe space for the victim, support her in dealing with the situation, including accompanying her to the police or providing legal support.
We aim to prevent dire psychological and societal consequences for victims we help. We also aim to inspire long-lasting change within society, by providing the tools to identify and deal with the problem to the wider community. We aim to inspire a community that does not tolerate SGBV, and that enforces accountability for the infringement of women's rights. We hope women and girls will be empowered to speak up when they experience digital violence and receive support and aid from the community.
