This project will provide daily nutritious porridge meals 6 days a week for 12 months to over 10,000 children experiencing classroom hunger in Nairobi's Viwandani informal settlement. Providing these meals has helped improve their immunity, enhanced their health and moods, improved their social and emotional well-being, increased school attendance rates and improved their grades. This project enables them to live healthily and thrive in education.
According to the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), 52,583 inhabitants per square km in Viwandani live in extreme poverty. We estimate that over 40,000 children experience classroom hunger due to limited access to food. They do not participate in class because of low energy, low morale, and malnutrition, and often can't attend school because of hunger. This project will serve 10000 kids for 12 months with daily meals to enable them to live healthily and thrive in education.
This project provides daily porridge meals that are constituted with the necessary vitamins and minerals that provide the children's bodies with the required energry to be able to attend school and actively participate in class. Our meals have been observed to significantly affect school attendance rates and academic performances within the children. Each daily meal prevents a child from attending school hungry and greatly reduces the level of classroom hunger in Viwandani.
This project will consistently provide daily porridge meals 6 days a week for 12 months to allow over 10,000 children in Viwandani to go to school free from hunger. This will lead to improved child health and development, enhanced educational outcomes, social and community development, less economic strain on parents, sustainable development, public health improvement and breaking the cycle of poverty.
