From the hopelessness of displacement and disruption for nearly one million Somalis in refugee camps in the Horn of Africa, OLE's truly awesome learning coaches at the Dadaab Camp have made it possible for OLE's new program: Peacebuilders for Somalia: A Career Pathways Program.
Peacebuilders for Somalia seeks to empower individuals as contributing members of their communities and ultimately drivers of peace and development in Somalia. In its pilot stages, this program aims to engage individuals at the Dadaab refugee camp as peacebuilders who will develop skills in four career pathways- education, technology, business, and health- in order contribute to economic development and peacebuilding in Somali communities. Through their purposeful work in these communities, we hope to demonstrate the effectiveness of peace builders in helping Somalia rebuild community by community. Furthermore the program aims to provides refugees with marketable and in-demand skills while also providing them meaningful opportunities to determine their own career pathway.
This initial three-year program prioritizes development of curriculum and courses. In this phase a selected team of 40 peacebuilders in Dadaab will support course content development at OLE’s Community Learning Centers, which have been delivering community centered education programs since 2013. In addition, our team affiliated with Mogadishu University will work closely with professionals skilled in the fields of education, health, technology, and business to lead in curriculum development and accreditation. In the second phase, we will test this content and curriculum as 9-12 month certification courses. In our third phase we will try this model in Somali villages committed to peace building and improvement, and, in our fourth and final phase, we will move towards scaling our model.
OLE's awe-inspring team of 6 learning coaches have been instrumental in the process of this program succeed. And have been especially committed to have the pilot Peacebuilders be equally young women and young men.
The Atlassian Foundation is generously providing seed funding for this pilot. Now is indeed the time to invest in the coaches and the Community Learning Centers in Dadaab to ensure the smooth and productive process preparing Somali refugees in the camp to make their hopeful future a reality.
