Summary

Thousands of Mexican women are diagnosed with breast cancer yearly, and some are unable to access treatment due to the lack of oncology institutions. Women in the State of Hidalgo, where 86% of the population lives in poverty, must travel to Mexico City to receive care. The lack of resources, as well as the remoteness of their homes, prevent them from getting the care they need. CIMA will ensure transportation for cancer patients form their homes to the clinics to receive their treatment.

Challenge

After eight years carrying out actions to help the Hidalgo community in terms of breast and cervical cancer, we identified and confirmed the problem in the state when we saw that the public health system could not ensure continuity in cancer treatment for women with a positive diagnosis, due to the lack of access to health clinics in the area.

Solution

"En Route to Life" allows women to access timely treatment for breast and cervical cancer, eliminating the barrier of transportation from their place of origin to second and third level hospitals where oncology services are available. The vehicle used for the program is the response to the lack of economic resources and community transportation infrastructure for the women of Hidalgo to timely attend specialised services in order to increase the chances of survival and quality of life.

Long-Term Impact

In our past experience with the program, we have managed to transport approximately 900 women every year, that is cancer patients so that they can be treated in a timely and correct manner. This translates into a great improvement in the patient's and their families or care givers' quality of life; families that do not disintegrate due to the unnecessary loss (in most cases) of a pillar member of the family nucleus.
