The rising waters of Lake Tanganyika have caused a displacement of the population that lived from fishing. This project aims to create hope for displaced women and girls including women recently released from prison who found their husbands already remarried and whose families consider it an insult at the community level. The project activities will be limited to capacity building in the creation of income-generating activities and financial support for micro-projects benefiting from the project
The displacement of the population from the Gatumba area to the commune of Mubimbi following the rise in the waters of Lake Tanganyika, has caused a lack of employment for the entire displaced population including women and girls who were previously involved in the sale of fish and cross-border trade of fruits to the DRC. This idleness imposed by the displacement has caused a family in all families. Some women engage in prostitution to survive, hence ascending family conflicts.
To try to solve this problem, the project plans to carry out socio-professional reintegration through two main actions: 1. Organize a 9-month vocational training session for 900 displaced women and girls in the Mubimbi site; 2. Financial support in the form of start-up kits for 45 groups of 900 project beneficiaries based on the vocational training received. This will allow beneficiaries to satisfy their needs without resorting to prostitution and/or other negative behaviors such as theft.
The project will strengthen the skills of 900 displaced women and girls in different types of trades such as basketry, sewing and others. 45 groups bringing together the 900 women will be able to benefit from start-up kits for their micro projects. Those who have already resorted to prostitution to try to survive will abandon this bad attitude. This will put an end to the ascending family conflicts caused by the idleness of the beneficiaries of this project.
