Father Ben visited India in January 2025 to oversee relief efforts, assess the progress of ongoing projects, and reconnect with the communities affected by the devastating hurricane of December 2024. His visit aimed to provide direct support, evaluate the needs of the people, and strengthen Dalit Solidarity’s initiatives.
During his visit, Father Ben witnessed firsthand the destruction caused by the hurricane. Many families had lost their homes, livestock, and essential resources. St. Patrick’s Academy, which provides education to 750 children and employment to 60 staff members, suffered extensive damage but was restored thanks to generous donations. Despite the challenges, the resilience of the children and villagers was evident.
Father Ben personally distributed essential relief materials, including food, blankets, and medical supplies, to affected families. His presence brought comfort and reassurance to the community, reinforcing their hope for recovery. He also met with students, teachers, and parents to discuss the school’s needs and ensure continuity in education despite financial hardships.
A key focus of the visit was the empowerment of Dalit and tribal communities through education and vocational training. Father Ben visited Dalit Solidarity’s tailoring project, where 15 young women had recently graduated and begun earning for their families. He encouraged them by distributing sewing machines and emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency in breaking the cycle of poverty.
Father Ben held discussions with local leaders, educators, and volunteers to strategize sustainable solutions for long-term recovery. Plans were made to enhance educational programs, provide scholarships for underprivileged students, and expand vocational training for women. His commitment to Dalit empowerment and social justice was reaffirmed through these engagements.
